Marcus Sims is a multidisciplinary artist working in wood, rhythm and music, earth awareness and healing. He graduated magna cum laude from Shenandoah Conservatory with a B.M. in music composition, and has performed, recorded and taught over many years. Marcus is certified as an Advanced taketina teacher, and has studied since 1998 with Reinhard Flatischler, the Austrian master drummer who developed Taketina. (www.taketina.com)
Marcus also has years of study and experience with body-centered psychology, Deep Ecology, men's work with the Mankind Project, Iyengar yoga, modern dance, ritual process and Fire Circle technology. He founded and leads the Mankind Project Drumming Society, and in 2001 sparked the formation of the Rhythm Workers Union.
His first furniture piece was a cradle for his sister’s first child, built in 1975. He is self taught as a woodworker, although his co-workers at the Woodworker's Club have given him many tips. Since 1990 Marcus has salvaged fallen logs in Montgomery County Md. and has accumulated 20,000 plus bd. ft. of hard woods, including black walnut, mulberry, cherry, catalpa, locust, hickory, and osage orange.
